Intern at Balkan Migration: Georgi – Step by Step Towards the Dream of Becoming a Respected Lawyer

Georgi is 19 years old, a first-year law student at UNSS in Sofia, and an intern at Balkan Migration – Sofia. Inspired by the desire to defend justice and build a successful legal career, he joined our team to combine theory with practice. As an intern, Georgi participates in office organization, accompanies colleagues in institutional work, and conducts research on projects such as “Youth Employment+” and “Seasonal Workers up to 90 Days”. He emphasizes that he most appreciates the team’s support and friendly atmosphere, which help him grow and take confident steps toward his dream of becoming a respected lawyer.

Introduce Yourself – Where Do You Study, What Are Your Dreams, How Old Are You, and Where Are You From

Hello, my name is Georgi, and I am an intern at Balkan Migration. I graduated from the Second English High School, and I am currently in my first year of Law at UNSS. I am 19 years old and from Sofia. My dream is to become a respected lawyer one day.

Why Did You Decide to Study Law and What Inspired You?

I have wanted to study law since I was a child. I have many relatives who have completed this field, and I have always been interested in it. Additionally, my character, strong sense of right and wrong, sense of justice, and well-developed moral values guide me in this direction.

Why Did You Choose to Join Our Office in Sofia?

I was attracted by the office’s unconventional mission. There are not many offices that focus on this aspect of law. Additionally, I liked the idea of gaining practical experience while still studying theoretical subjects at university, which I believe is very important for my development as a future lawyer.

Which Area of Law Interests You the Most and Why?

I am not yet fully familiar with all areas of law, but I am confident that I will orient myself over time.

What Does a Typical Day as an Intern at the Office Look Like?

My day starts early in the morning – I open the office, organize any unarranged documents, and then, together with Mr. Mićić, we make a plan for the day. This ensures that no task is left unfinished and that time is distributed as efficiently as possible.
Each person focuses on their daily goals, with short breaks to discuss completed tasks or arising issues. At the end of the day, I review whether all tasks have been completed, and if anything remains unfinished, it is carried over to the next day, ensuring that the most important objectives are addressed on the day they are assigned.

What Tasks Are You Entrusted With and What Do You Learn From Them?

Quite often, colleagues take time to explain a legal issue that has arisen during work. Additionally, whenever a colleague has a task in an institution, I accompany them to observe how our work is conducted administratively.
I am responsible for organizing both physical and electronic documents, as well as many other tasks for which I have already become competent.

Which Project or Case Has Been the Most Interesting to You and Why?

Mr. Mićić entrusted me to conduct research for two projects – “Youth Employment+” and “Seasonal Workers up to 90 Days”. To cover these requests, I had to learn many things I had no prior knowledge of. I learned a lot about the processes for both projects and what is required to implement them successfully.

What Surprises You Most About the Daily Work at a Law Office?

I am surprised by how smoothly even difficult tasks are completed and how quickly the workday passes when there is synchronization and understanding within the team.

What Skills Do You Think Are Most Important for a Young Lawyer?

In my opinion, it is very important for a young lawyer to be able to express themselves and defend what they believe in. Communication skills open many opportunities and doors in various fields, and in law – three times more. No one said the legal profession is easy, but if you can represent yourself, you can represent anyone.

How Do You Think the Internship Will Help Your Future Career?

The office provides me with invaluable connections and practical knowledge in a very interesting area of law.

How Do You Handle Challenges or Difficult Cases?

I am an adaptable person and can adjust to any situation, no matter how complex. The basis for solving any problem is calmness and clear thinking.

What Advice Would You Give to Other Law Students Considering an Internship?

I would definitely advise them to start as early as possible. Practice is one of the two key components of the profession. If you don’t develop it over time, you will be left with empty knowledge that may not be useful if you lack the practical skills to handle specific cases.

What Do You Like Most About Working With Our Team?

Many things. Most importantly, even though our work is serious, communication among colleagues is free and friendly, even in the most stressful situations. The office atmosphere is always positive, which greatly helps concentration and efficiency.
I also appreciate the flexibility of working hours. Initially, I was concerned about balancing work and university, but with the help of Mr. Mićić, we created a schedule that allows me to successfully manage both responsibilities. I am surrounded by people who have gone through the same path I am taking, and the most important thing is that they understand this and always help as much as possible.

What Are Your Goals After Graduating from University?

It is still early to make final plans, but my main goal is to practice law and develop as much as possible in the profession.
